Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) is calling out his state’s far-left “sanctuary cities,” vowing to defund them if they refuse to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Republican governor’s comments came during an appearance on Fox News Channel, where he discussed legislation that he had put forward last week, which would require all law enforcement to work with federal authorities, including ICE, to aid in the deportation of criminal illegal aliens.

Youngkin cited numerous violent crimes committed by illegal aliens in Virginia, then stated: “If you don’t cooperate with ICE when there’s a detainer in place, I’m going to go to work and take your funding away in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are not a sanctuary state. We will not, we will no longer allow this to happen, and we’re going to work together to make sure that we keep Virginians safe.”

The Virginia governor’s office also released a press release about the issue on December 12, which announced “a ‘No Sanctuary Cities’ budget proposal to require local law enforcement, sheriffs, and jail directors to fully comply with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers and provide notification to ICE 48 hours prior to the release of an illegal immigrant who commits a crime. Additionally, funding will be withheld from localities that purport to be ‘sanctuary’ cities, or enact practices impeding cooperation with ICE.”

Youngkin noted in the press release that “Criminals who are in the United States illegally will be turned over to ICE. We must stop the cycle of violence and crime that is being enabled by some local governments.”

Virginia has seen numerous instances of illegal aliens with long rap sheets being released from jail, who then go on to commit other crimes. One example would be 31-year-old Denis Humberto Navarette Romero, who was charged in November with abduction with the intent to rape. Luckily, the victim was able to escape and call for help.

Romero is a Honduran illegal alien with a lengthy criminal history, including prior sex crimes, but Fairfax County authorities still decided to release him from jail without notifying ICE, essentially aiding him in his future crimes.
