Women’s Sports Team Supports Attempted Cop Killer

The Georgetown University women’s basketball team is facing backlash on social media after they expressed support for an attempted cop killer who previously played on their team.

Former Georgetown basketball player Sidney Wilson was shot and killed while attempting to murder a Fairfax County police officer. Wilson died in a Virginia hospital on September 16 after being shot by the officer she tried to kill, who had been sent to her apartment after a mental health counselor requested that police conduct a welfare check, reporting that she was in an “agitated state.”

Body camera footage from the incident showed Wilson repeatedly swinging a knife at the police officer — later identified as 14-year police veteran Peter Liu — slashing him in the face at least once and refusing his orders to “back up.” The officer gave her many more chances than most people would have, as he would have been justified in shooting her as soon as she came at him with the knife — but he still allowed her to cut him at least once and repeatedly ignore his orders before finally shooting her.

According to the Daily Mail, the 6’6” woman charged at Liu unprovoked after he showed up to perform a simple welfare check on her. The outlet noted that Wilson “slashed the officer multiple times in his face before the cop fired his gun.”

Liu fired two shots after Wilson repeatedly lunged at him, and fired three more times after she continued to move toward him. As she fell to the ground, the footage showed blood dripping from the officer’s head onto his hand and the floor while he called in the shooting and requested medical assistance. Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis has since stated that he stood by his officer’s actions.

Following Wilson’s death, the official account for Georgetown Women’s Basketball posted on X: “Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). Forever a Hoya.”

The team followed that post with another mourning her death, writing: “Once a Hoya, Always a Hoya We love you Syd! We will keep you in our hearts.”

The Georgetown Women’s Basketball team faced immediate backlash for their shocking posts, with many pointing out that they outright praised “an attempted cop killer.”

“She slashed a cop, and would have murdered him for no reason if he had not stopped her,” another user wrote.

Others questioned how the post still remains on the team’s X account after the truth about Wilson’s actions came to light.

“She tried to kill a cop. What are you teaching these kids at Georgetown? I’m surprised this is still up,” one user wrote.

Many users pointed out how many chances Wilson had to stop her “psychotic” rampage before it turned deadly, arguing that her death was essentially suicide by cop because there was no other possible outcome for her actions.

“How disgraceful of you. Maybe instead of mourning the ‘tragic loss,’ you should condemn the crazed violent rampage Sydney went on before the officer responded with deadly force. Sydney slashed at an innocent man’s face and head with a knife, severely wounding him. He backed off and gave Sydney plenty of opportunity to just stop. Sydney chose to charge at him with obvious intent to harm. This wasn’t a tragedy. It was a self-inflicted consequence of psychotic, evil behavior,” another user argued.
