California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has demanded that the state legislature give him $25 million to “Trump-proof” the state through planned lawsuits against President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration.
Soon after Trump won his landslide victory, Newsom announced the special session to “Trump-proof” California, rather than to actually deal with the serious problems the state is facing. Instead of actually dealing with the illegal immigrant crisis, the homelessness crisis, and skyrocketing crime, Newsom would rather spend California taxpayers’ money on trying to fight Trump — which many people believe is part of his strategy to prepare himself for a presidential run in 2028.
Trump responded to the special session announcement last month by pointing out that the California governor was “using the term ‘Trump-Proof’ as a way of stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again’.”
On Monday, Newsom bragged about how his administration would be going on the offensive against Trump’s policies rather than just reacting — claiming that California had already succeeded in the past at reversing many of the policies of the first Trump administration at the “agency level.” According to Breitbart News, Newsom “may have been referring to Trump’s decision to withhold $1 billion in funding for the high-speed rail system California never built; President Joe Biden restored that funding.”
Newsom told reporters: “We know what happened the last time Donald Trump was president. He vandalized our progress. He vandalized our programs. He broke the law.”
Sharing the clip of Newsom in a post on X, a popular account pointed out: “Keep in mind California is more dangerous than it’s ever been, thefts are at historic highs, homelessness is worse than ever. Yet Newsom thinks Trump is his biggest problem.”

While California has long had a Democrat supermajority in both houses of the state legislature, the deep-blue state did shift right in the 2024 election alongside the rest of the country — with a staggering nearly 40% of Californians voting for Trump over failed Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Gavin Newscum says we have to ‘Trump-Proof’ CA.
Doesn’t look like that’s working.
Looks like CA is Trump country and we just might need a Californian to stand up and fight when that losers term is up in 2 years. pic.twitter.com/LMzMV033S5— Caitlyn Jenner (@Caitlyn_Jenner) November 8, 2024
It is unclear if Newsom’s effort to siphon away tax dollars from important issues to his “anti-Trump resistance” will actually succeed in the state legislature, though it is highly likely that the Trump Derangement Syndrome in the California legislature will probably aid in Newsom’s efforts to fight Trump’s mandate.
However, Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) has vowed to push back on Newsom’s “Trump-proofing” of California, promising to instead “Newsom-proof” the state.
“Newsom is asking for $25 million to “Trump-proof” California. He doesn’t want to relinquish our national lead in gas prices, housing costs, taxes, homelessness, poverty, or illegal border crossings. In the House, I’ll use every possible tool to Newsom-proof our state,” he wrote in a post on X.
