U.S. Navy Announces ‘First Gender-Neutral Submarine’

During a ceremony in Middletown, New Jersey, the woke U.S. Navy celebrated commissioning its first “gender-neutral” submarine.

On Saturday, the USS New Jersey was commissioned into the Navy’s Submarine Force. During a ceremony at Naval Weapons Station Earle, New Jersey commanding officer Cmdr. Steve Halle celebrated the new “gender-neutral” submarine.

“You operate the most complex platform on the planet and you continuously strive for excellence. I’m amazed and humbled at what we have accomplished. Our superior professionalism is enhanced by our crew integration and our diversity. We have exceeded expectations at every turn and overcome every obstacle set before us,” he stated during the ceremony, according to Fox News.

The USS New Jersey, a Virginia-class submarine with a crew of nearly 135 Navy personnel, is the first in its class to be designed specifically to fully integrate both male and female Navy personnel.

Speaking with Stars and Stripes, Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, commander of Submarine Force Atlantic, claimed that the “submarine community is a fully gender-integrated warfighting force.”

This “gender-neutral” submarine has been modified in several ways to reach this goal — including adding more doors and washrooms to allow for additional separate sleeping and bathing areas for men and women, as well as lowering some of the submarine’s overhead valves to make it easier for women to reach them. Other modifications include installing steps to climb up triple-high bunk beds and installing steps near stacked laundry machines.

The Navy officially ended the ban on women serving aboard submarines back in 2010. In the past five years, the number of female officers in the submarine force has doubled, while the number of female enlisted sailors has tripled, according to Gaucher.

As of August 2024, there are 730 women assigned to operational submarines.

“To support women serving onboard submarines, the submarine force, starting with [the Pre-Commissioning Unit] New Jersey, is building all future [nuclear-powered attack submarines] and the new Columbia-class, [ballistic-missile submarines] gender-neutral from the keel up,” Gaucher said.
