Zinnia wrote “If children can’t consent to puberty blockers which pause any permanent changes even with the relevant professional evaluation, how can they consent to the permanent and irreversible changes that come with their own puberty with no professional evaluation whatsoever?”

The Tragedy of Keira Bell
Zinnia’s comments came in response to a UK court ruling on the tragic case of Keira Bell vs. Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. Ms. Bell sued the UK’s National Health Service in March after she was prescribed puberty blockers at age 16.
The BBC wrote, “She felt there wasn’t enough investigation or therapy before she reached that stage. After just three one-hour appointments she was prescribed puberty blockers before she was put on testosterone.
“I should have been challenged on the proposals or the claims that I was making for myself,” she said. “And I think that would have made a big difference as well. If I was just challenged on the things I was saying.” Keira decided to stop her cross-sex hormones last year at age 22 and has grown to accept her sex as female, but she is angry about what happened to her in the last decade. She said to the BBC,
“I was allowed to run with this idea that I had, almost like a fantasy, as a teenager…. and it has affected me in the long run as an adult.”
“When I was 20 I had a double mastectomy,”
“I’m very young. I’ve only just stepped into adulthood and I have to deal with this kind of burden or radical difference – in comparison to others at least.”
“It was heartbreaking to realise I’d gone down the wrong path.”
The Ruling of Her Majesty’s Court
Keira, 23 from Cambridge won her judgement and the NHS “welcomed the clarity” of the ruling. The BBC reports, Dame Victoria Sharp, sitting with Lord Justice Lewis and Mrs Justice Lieven, wrote in the ruling:
“It is highly unlikely that a child aged 13 or under would be competent to give consent to the administration of puberty blockers. It is doubtful that a child aged 14 or 15 could understand and weigh the long-term risks and consequences of the administration of puberty blockers.
They added: In respect of young persons aged 16 and over, the legal position is that there is a presumption that they have the ability to consent to medical treatment.
Given the long-term consequences of the clinical interventions at issue in this case, and given that the treatment is as yet innovative and experimental, we recognise that clinicians may well regard these as cases where the authorisation of the court should be sought prior to commencing the clinical treatment.”
In a world where Zinnia’s obtusely derisive response to Keira’s tragic story is lauded and praised it makes it all the more difference when old souls like John Cleese can bring us back to reality and show no fear of being branded “trans-phobic”. It seems the Judges in the UK are much like Cleese made of sterner stuff than the cancel-mob on twitter.
Anyone who calls for children to be placed on puberty blockers as a treatment for Gender Dysphoria is advocating for child abuse. Anyone who allows it to happen is an accessory. Full stop. God save the Queen’s courageous Judges of the UK for ruling to protect children. “Adult demon female” indeed.
It might be interesting to find how many rocks need to be turned over to find these fools. I cannot even picture sending any member of my family to a government (incompetent) school.
