Michael Kohlhof, a Houston man, is currently in the hospital after undergoing a double amputation that cost him both of his hands and parts of his feet.
Kohlhof’s family believes the cause of this terrible tragedy was a flea bite he received while in Houston.
This type of typhus can only be caused by a flea bite and it is usually found in California and Texas.
Kohlhof was originally feeling unwell in Houston but went to San Antonio last month to help his mother who had just undergone surgery.
While he was there, his health deteriorated so quickly that he could not even get out of bed anymore.
He eventually made it to the emergency room where doctors informed him that he had typhus, likely caused by a flea bite.
His partner Alishpa Masood said the doctors told them that if they had waited any longer than they did, they would have lost him due to how critical his condition was becoming at the time.
Unbelievably, despite all that has happened to him so far, Kohlhof is managing to stay positive throughout this difficult experience as he faces an uncertain future ahead of him.
It is heartbreaking for Kohlhof’s family because prior to being hospitalized with typhus-induced double amputations, Michael had been trying on his own to get well without having insurance or seeking medical care sooner.
In order for Michael’s family members to support him through such an intense battle financially and emotionally they put up a GoFundMe account so people from around the world are able donate money towards helping Michael with medical costs associated with his long road ahead.
