ICYMI – Democrats had a problem.

Rep. Donald McEachin (D-VA) passed away.

He has been battling cancer for the last decade, and finally succumbed to the disease.

Sad Day

His office announced his death, adding, “Until a new representative is elected, our office will remain open and continue to serve our constituents. The family asks for privacy at this time. Arrangements will be announced over the next few days.”

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) stated, “Donald and Colette McEachin have been wonderful friends to me and Lisa for more than thirty years.

“We often bonded over stories and laughs about our mutual challenges raising families with three strong-willed daughters.

“Up until the very end, Don was a fighter.

“Even though he battled cancer and faced other trials in recent years, he never lost his focus on social and environmental justice.

“Tonight, Virginia has lost a great leader and I have lost a great friend.”

Nancy Pelosi added, “He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, and he leaves behind a legacy that will improve the lives of all of our children for generations to come.

“May it be a comfort to his loving wife Colette, their dear children Mac, Briana and Alexandra, grandchild Gael and the entire McEachin family that so many join them in mourning during this sad time.”

This meant the new session would start with 434 members, but it would not impact the majority in terms of a new speaker yet.

At the time, McCarthy still needed 218 unless someone did not show up or votes present, which would then reduce the total needed down to 217.

Since the GOP is expected to hold 222 seats and there are five Republicans adamant they will not vote for McCarthy, he needed to persuade one member to vote present to lock in the Speakership.
