One of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history has decided to walk away from racing altogether.

Jimmy Johnson, a seven-time champion, has announced that he is retiring.

Johnson had been concentrating on the Indy circuit, and while he may come back for one more try at glory, the 47-year-old is hanging up his steering wheel.

Time to Go

In addition to his seven titles, Johnson notched 83 wins during his career before stepping away from NASCAR in 2020 to concentrate on Indy racing.

He has not had the success in Indy car racing that he enjoyed in NASCAR, which surely contributed to his decision to spend more time with his family and enjoy some of that prize money he has earned over the years.

Johnson stated, “It’s been an interesting process to feel so fulfilled with the experience and then also try to make a decision.

“In the big scheme of things, there is so much life-planning going on with the kids.

“We’ve always had an idea of trying to live abroad for a year or two.

“We love Colorado and want to spend more time there, and there’s just so much swirling personally and professionally that I just wanted to take some time and make the decision not on the back of a positive or negative experience on the racetrack.”

Johnson may come back at some point to try the “double.”

Competing and finishing the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same day has only been accomplished once in history.

Tony Stewart was able to complete the feat, while Robby Gordon, John Andretti, and Kurt Busch all tried and failed.

Johnson, on that one last hurrah, stated, “You know me and endurance sports, and the double sounds awesome.

“I’ve always had this respect for the guys who have done the double.

“I would say it is more of a respect thing than a bucket-list item, and I’d love to put some energy into that idea and see if I can pull it off.”
