Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has a plan to protect former President Donald Trump from criminal prosecution.

The Florida Republican recently announced that he would be introducing legislation in Congress to “immunize” the former president from any potential criminal charges.

Nancy Pelosi had previously stated that there were “exquisite” indictments against Trump, and it appears that Gaetz is attempting to prevent those charges from ever being pursued.

Gaetz’s plan involves bringing Donald Trump in front of Congress and granting him immunity from any possible criminal proceedings or subpoenas.

This type of immunity is known as “transactional immunity,” which means that anything said during the course of testimony cannot be used against the person testifying in a court of law.

Essentially, if Trump were granted transactional immunity, then none of his statements while testifying before Congress could be used against him in a criminal case.

Gaetz believes that this kind of protection could be offered to Trump by setting up a select committee within Congress with supermajority support.

He also cited an 18 U.S Code 6002 and 6005, which outlines the process for offering transactional immunity under certain circumstances.

It is worth noting that this kind of protection has not been used recently, but there are legal precedents for it existing under certain conditions.

One interesting aspect about this proposal is its timing; it comes just as Nancy Pelosi was discussing potential indictments against Trump and just as Congress was leaving Washington for recess.

Gaetz believes these events may not have been coincidental and believes they are instead part of an effort to accelerate activity against the former president before he can receive any kind of legal protection from Congress.

Charlie Kirk asked if this proposed layer of protection would cover even obstruction claims, but unfortunately this remains unclear at present time as no further details have been released regarding specific crimes or allegations covered by such an immunization plan should it come into effect.
