Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has been working his tail off since winning the nomination for House Speaker.
After the initial vote, it honestly looked like he had little chance to take the nomination.
That changed, however, after he and several of his advocates started talking to members resisting Jordan getting the gavel.
Making Progress
There were close to six dozen members of the GOP House caucus that were adamant they were not going to vote for Jordan after the initial vote.
Jordan started calling them, addressing each of their needs in terms of what they wanted to see in order to elect him as the Speaker.
In just a few days, we have seen opposition members rescind that they would be running against him and throw their support behind Jordan.
Most importantly, former Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) is openly supporting Jordan, something he did not do with Scalise.
I bring this up because a large contingent of the resistance are McCarthy loyalists who want to see him back in as Speaker.
Even Majority Whip Mike Emmer is supporting him now, and he was one of the names floated to run if Jordan could not get the 217 votes needed.
His office stated, “Whip Emmer has no plans to run for Speaker.
“Whip Emmer spoke to Congressman Jordan directly this AM and told him he was supporting him. We have been in touch with his team all day in support.”
With such a thing margin, it will only take a handful of members to vote against Jordan to block him, so let’s just hope he has all his ducks in a row before putting this on the floor.
