On June 1st, the organization revealed that they were canceling the event.
“We regretfully reveal that due to safety and security issues, the family-friendly drag efficiency prepared for Pride in the Park has been cancelled. This choice was jointly made by the City of Jasper, ONE- Dubois County, and the Dubois County Pride committee,” their statement, posted to Facebook, read. “While the Dubois County Pride committee is dissatisfied by this advancement, we remain in no chance prevented. Our objective to promote and promote love and equality remains steadfast.”
Dubois County Pride added that “Pride in the Park will continue with food trucks opening at 6 p.m. and a complimentary pool celebration at 7 p.m.”
“The Troubadours of Divine Happiness will carry out from 7 to 8:30. Louisville Turners Circus will roam the park in between 7 and 9. During all this, a variety of games will be readily available consisting of beach ball, cornhole and candy cannon. Stations for face painting, balloon animals and henna tattoos will also be open as will a range of info booths,” the announcement continued. “The event will concluded with a glow dance celebration from 9-10:30.”
Journalists actually connected to Dubois County Pride to ask about if they got any particular dangers and did not receive an immediate reply.
According to The Courier Press, “Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide, however, said the drag show was canceled after a “miscommunication” between the event organizers and the city’s public works department — the entity that approves requests for public-parks use. That led to it not being included on the itinerary for Pride in the Park.
“When we were informed of it, we didn’t feel like we were prepared at that time to ensure anything without running it through our departments,” Vonderheide said. “I don’t know what I don’t know. I don’t claim to be an expert on family-friendly drag shows and I don’t think the public understands what that means either.
We have probably as much education to do as anything.”
