A new member of the state legislature in Mississippi has passed away.
Rep. Andy Stepp (Calhoun County) passed away on Thursday.
He was only 66 years old.
Gone Too Soon
Stepp was a prominent figure in the local area long before he decided to run for office.
He has been a small business owner in the area for decades.
In addition to owning a local pharmacy, he was also an instructor at the University of Mississippi.
He only recently decided to get into the political arena, running for a seat in the state legislature that had been vacated by Rep. Jim Beckett.
Stepp lost a very close special election, but he came right back and won the seat in the general election.
This was only his first full year in office at the time of his passing.
Mississippi House Speaker Jason White stated, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of fellow House colleague, Rep. Andy Stepp.
“A freshman member, Andy joined the legislature in 2024, and as a pharmacist and business-owner for 35 years, made a great contribution to legislation.”
Republican state Sen. Ben Suber from Calhoun County, stated, “He was always willing to go above and beyond.
“He would meet people at night at the pharmacy and would do whatever he could to help people.”
The governor will now have to schedule another special election, which will likely take place in the spring.
Rest in peace, sir.
