The ghost of legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt has evidently been very busy lately, according to one driver involved in a horrific crash.

One man is facing a number of charges because he allegedly drove the wrong way on a Las Vegas freeway. That alone would have been bad enough, but he offered an incredibly off-the-wall explanation for this motor vehicle misadventure.

The man (with a straight face, no less) told the judge that the reason for his traffic escapade was because the ghost of legendary NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt told him that he should do it. This troubling incident allegedly occurred that previous Friday afternoon when, according to police, Daniel Asseff entered the southbound lane of highway I-215 and was heading the wrong way down that freeway.

This was an incredibly dangerous drive and several motorists crashed as a result. Fortunately, no one was hurt due to this chaos and Asseff was promptly arrested.

When Mr. Asseff appeared in court that following Tuesday, that was the first time that he stunned everyone when he told them that he had been told to make the perilous one-way trip by the spirit of Dale Earnhardt Sr., referring to the sports legend by his nickname “The Intimidator”.

What was the ghost’s alleged reason for this strange request?

Well, the motorist claimed that the reason that Mr, Earnhardt showed up from his eternal resting place to make this request was to convince the mayor of Las Vegas to bring this popular motorsport back to the city. Needless to say, whether the man really believes this or not, he is now facing numerous charges for his dangerous evening.

Either way, it’s not very likely that this man is going to be able to get the ghost of Dale Earnhardt Sr. to be able to take the stand in his defense. It was probably just a mental breakdown on the part of Mr. Asseff.

There is such a thing as idol worship, and there is such a thing as taking it to an extreme, and that is exactly what Asseff appears to be doing here.

Of course, in a way it’s totally understandable that Asseff would get obsessed with Dale Earnhardt Sr. For over twenty years, there was no one better on that race track than The Intimidator.

Earnhardt began his racing career with Winston Cup Racing from 1975 to 1978, Rod Osterlund Racing from 1979 to 1980, and Richard Childress Racing from 1984 to 2001.

It was during the final lap of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001 that Earnhardt was killed. His son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has carried on his legacy with an impressive racing career of his own. As of yet, there is no word on what Junior thinks about this story about the ghost of legendary NASCAR driver Dale Sr. allegedly appearing to this gentleman.
