A famous rap artist was shot and killed outside of a bakery in southern Memphis, Tennessee where he was known to stop to buy cookies.

Memphis rapper Young Dolph, 36, whose real name is Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was shot and killed on November 17th, 2021, outside of Makeda’s Butter Cookies.

According to Maurice Hill, the owner of the bakery, his employees said that Young Dolph was walking into the store to buy some cookies when two men drove up in a white, two-door Mercedes-Benz.

FOX13 obtained pictures of the two suspected shooters as they run up past Dolph’s camo Corvette. One appears to be holding a handgun, while the other is holding a semi-automatic rifle. The two thugs aimed their weapons at the bakery and opened fire, then fled the scene.

Memphis police have called the shooting “senseless” and said in a statement: “Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all who were affected by this horrific act of violence.”

Soon after the shooting occurred, hundreds of people gathered in the area that the shooting took place to mourn the loss of the famous Memphis icon, with people laying on the ground crying next to a makeshift memorial. Because the bakery was special to Young Dolph, it has drawn special attention as a memorial to him. He had been frequenting the shop very often, and had been there just a week prior, “spreading love and promoting the business,” according to reporting by FOX13.

As people continued to attend the makeshift memorial outside of the bakery, police attempted to keep the scene civil, despite chaos breaking out at times. Another shooting reportedly took place at the scene, leading to more police involvement, though the victim lived and was transported to the hospital with only minor injuries.
