Democrats in the House are putting “purpose” legislation on the floor.
That is what I call legislation that has no chance of passing in the Senate but that gets them headlines.
I am referring to the Right to Contraception Act, which eight House Republicans also supported.
If we are being serious, most people do not want to see contraception blocked.
Now, I am NOT including abortion pills in that, which Democrats like to consider birth control these days.
I would tell any Republican politician that believes “regular” contraceptives should be banned that they are an idiot.
We want to stop abortions, not create more pregnancies, so let’s be realistic about this.
This act included abortion drugs, so it never should have been signed on to by a single Republican, but they crossed the line and now they feed Pelosi and her fellow Democrats talking points.
Look no further than Pelosi’s speech after the bill passed the House, stating, “With this passage, Democrats will make clear.
“We will never quit in the fight against the outrageous right-wing assault on freedom.”
Who were the Republicans that crossed the line? For the most part, people will be out of office by choice or voted out next term.
They were Reps. Liz Cheney (WY), Anthony Gonzalez (OH), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Fred Upton (MI), Nancy Mace (S.C.), John Katko (N.Y.), Adam Kinzinger (IL), and Maria Salazar (FL).
Two Republicans only voted present, being Reps. Bob Gibbs and Mike Kelly, both of Pennsylvania.
Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) responded, “If we allow the majority to undermine constitutional safeguards for an imagined and fake emergency, they will create more imagined emergencies in the future to violate and undermine our constitutional principles.”
I think we all know that already, but thanks for the reminder.
