A man allegedly burst into flames after being tased inside a police department in Upstate New York. On October 29th, Jason Jones entered the Catskill Village Police Department and began a confrontation with police, resulting in him being tased.

Police Chief Dave Darling described the situation as “horrible,” reporting that Jones had covered his body in hand sanitizer and police were worried that he was going to hurt himself.

Officers then tased him in an attempt to subdue him, and the reaction between the sanitizer and the taser caused him to burst into flames.

“I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it,” Darling said in a statement. “There are still details that we’re trying to develop.”

Jones, 29, is currently in “grave” condition in an intensive care unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, according to people briefed on the situation.

Kevin Luibrand, Jones’ attorney, said in a statement that he could not comment on what actions may be taken in connection with the incident, and also couldn’t comment on why Jones was inside the police department to begin with. The attorney did note that an exchange during the incident was caught on video.

“The goal right now is to preserve whatever evidence there is as to what happened and for he to do his best with doctors to recover as far as he can,” Luibrand said.

“In a letter to Darling dated Thursday, Luibrand requested that the department preserve all evidence in the case, including audio and video recordings from street cameras and other devices, as well as any computer data from any Tasers that were used during the encounter,” the Times Union, a local newspaper, reports.

Chief Darling has reported that there are cameras inside the police station, but his officers do not have body cameras.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Green County District Attorney’s Office.
