Oh how things have changed for Donald Trump in the space of just a few weeks.
Just prior to voters heading to the polls, Donald Trump was touting a 50-point lead against Ron “DeSanctimonious” during a campaign appearance.
The comment fell flat at the time, and now Trump is falling flat in the polls.
Trump in Trouble
I said at the time that Trump made a mistake in going after Ron DeSantis.
He made another mistake more recently when he suggested doing an end-around on our Constitution.
IMO, Trump proved he was putting himself before the conservative movement by announcing his campaign before all of the 2022 elections had been decided.
Trump loyalists will never be swayed away from Trump, but that is about all Trump has right now.
In a recent Vanderbilt University Poll, DeSantis is now leading Trump 54-41.
A recent FiveThirtyEight poll had DeSantis winning 42-24.
A Suffolk University poll has DeSantis in the lead 56-33.
There was a time when I never thought DeSantis would be able to beat Trump in a primary, but I think it is now very much leaning in DeSantis’ favor.
This all means nothing, however, if Trump does not get behind DeSantis if he beats Trump in the primary.
Trump still enjoys more than 60 percent support among those identifying at MAGA Republicans, and that is a significant number.
As a rough estimate, these are probably somewhere between 25-30 percent of active Republican voters right now.
Point being, if Trump gets pissy if he loses and walks away without throwing his support behind DeSantis, DeSantis cannot win a general election.
The problem, however, is if DeSantis does not run and Trump wins the GOP nomination, he will probably lose the general election because of his sliding support.
We are soon going to find out if this is all about Trump or if this all about the movement, as he says it is.
We need to get Trump on record, now, that he will support DeSantis if DeSantis beats him.
