Cases of ‘Flurona’ Emerge

While the name “flurona” may sound like a joke, the World Health Organization is claiming that cases of people testing positive for both COVID and the flu at the same time are very real.

“Flurona” is apparently a thing now, and it refers to when a patient tests positive for both influenza and COVID.

Israel confirmed its first case on December 30th, with doctors at Beilinson Hospital revealing that they discovered the dual infection in an unvaccinated pregnant woman whose symptoms were mild.

“She was diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived. Both tests came back positive, even after we checked again,” Prof. Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the hospital’s gynecology department, told Hamodia. “The disease is the same disease; they’re viral and cause difficulty breathing since both attack the upper respiratory tract.”

The pregnant woman was released from the hospital on December 30th in good condition, but Israel’s Health Ministry is currently investigating the case to determine whether the combination of infections could increase the severity of the illnesses.

Some reports have claimed that it is the first case in the world, but the World Health Organization has reported that several cases have been seen in the United States and across Asia, noting that the frequency of co-infection among COVID positive patients is 0.4% in America, while the rate is 4.5% in Asia.

Now, with the appearance of the so-called “flurona,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that people who are looking to maximize their protection against co-infection should get both the COVID vaccine and the flu vaccine during the same visit.

According to reporting from Fox 8, “Experts say past experience shows that vaccines tend to work as intended, with similar side effects, whether or not they are spaced out or given jointly.”
