During July of this year, George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and left-wing Swiss Billionaire Hansjörg Wyss were discovered quietly backing a non-profit called the National Trust for Local News. Conveniently, this same non-profit acquired nearly two dozen local papers in the swing state of Maine, which raised questions about what this could mean for the future of American politics.
The Open Society Foundations is an international grantmaking network founded by billionaire investor George Soros.
They have often funded progressive organizations, including media outlets in the past.
According to Media Research Center, Soros has donated $52 million to media organizations since 2003 – some of which breach ethical codes established by the Society of Professional Journalists due to conflicts of interest.
Meanwhile, Hansjörg Wyss is a major funder of left-leaning American advocacy groups and has funneled nearly $500 million into these causes via foreign influence loopholes.
He is also a supporter of States Newsroom – a left-wing network of local news outlets established as a Hopewell Fund project which is now expanding operations in Maine.
The National Trust for Local News acquired five daily newspapers and 17 weekly publications in Maine.
Despite denying that any of this funding was specifically used to purchase these local papers, it has been confirmed that both Soros’ Open Society Foundations and Wyss provided funds so that the National Trust could acquire them – something which had not been previously reported on.
These developments are concerning for Republicans because Maine has traditionally elected both Democrats and Republicans and Donald Trump won his district here in both 2016 and 2020 with Maine even coming close to voting for him over Hillary Clinton back in 2016 (losing by less than three points).

With Democratic Representative Jared Golden currently representing Maine’s 2nd congressional district, he may be targeted by national Republicans – potentially losing their foothold if they are unable to effectively counter any biased reporting from papers owned or influenced by Soros or Wyss’ backers.
