Joe Biden dishonored Memorial Day by using the sacred occasion to call for limitations on gun ownership that might encompass America’s most popular handguns, a shameful affront to the very freedoms our fallen servicemen and women died for. Biden discussed limitations on 9 mm pistols, which according to the ATF’s Annual Firearms Manufacturing & Export Report, comprised nearly half of brand-new handguns made in the U.S. in 2020.

As he frequently does, Biden started his remarks by speaking about his past as a senator, claiming that a New York City trauma doctor informed him about the risks of 9 mm bullets.

“And I sat with a trauma doctor, and I asked him — I said, ‘What’s the difference?  Why are so many people…’ — and not that many more people were being shot. This is now 20 years ago, or 25 years.  I said, ‘Why are they dying?’” Biden said.

“And they showed me X-rays. He said, ‘A .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out, may be able to get it, and save the life.  A 9-millimeter bullet blows the lung out of the body,’”

Biden made the claim that he was informed by a medical professional he did not call at a healthcare facility whose name he might not remember, according to a White House transcript of his comments.

“So the idea of these high-caliber weapons is of — there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of thinking about self-protection, hunting,” Biden said.

Biden then roamed into his familiar, disproven, refrain that cannons might not be acquired at the time the Second Amendment was passed.

“I mean, I just — and remember, the Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute. You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed.  You couldn’t go out and purchase a lot of weapons,” he said.

“And those who — not many are saying it anymore, but there was a while there where people were saying that, you know, ‘the Tree of Liberty is watered with the blood of patriots, and what we have to do is you have to be able to take on the government when they’re wrong.’  Well, to do that, you need an F-15, you know? Or you need an Abrams tank,” Biden said.

Biden’s remarks sparked a public uproar.

Biden’s attack on 9 mm guns was also not his first.

“The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether — whether it’s a 9- millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous,” he said last year at a CNN town hall.

When it comes to Biden’s claim about cannon, it got 4 Pinocchios from The Washington Post, implying it is at its highest level of blatant lies.

“We have no idea where he conjured up this notion about a ban on cannon ownership in the early days of the Republic, but he needs to stop making this claim,” the Post’s Glenn Kessler wrote.

He has not.
