I would imagine that Gregory McCalium felt pretty good about his grand idea to break into the home of Frank Corti.
After all, McCalium was a strapping young lad and Corti was a 71-year-old man at the time.
It was what McCalium did not know about Corti that flipped the script.
Uh Oh
The two men had a bit of squabble before this over noise complaints.
So, one night, McCalium thought it a good idea to grab a knife and break into Corti’s home.
Corti, a British Army vet and former junior boxing champion, was ready for him, however.
Corti stated, “As I saw it, it was a matter of do or die so I let his wrists go.
“Fortunately the element of surprise was with me, so I adjusted my position and hit him with my right hand. It was just below the eye.
“I did not knock him out, but he was stunned. I heard the knife drop. We grappled.
“I was trying to drag him out of the back door. We both fell to the floor.
“I had to subdue him by punching him, which I did not take a great deal of pleasure in.”
He absolutely mangled the kid, leaving the left side of his face looking like, as one person stated, “a car wreck.”
Oh, McCalium also got 4.5 years in jail for his failed effort.
