A poor high-school student was left mortified after a scuffle with a teacher left her completely stripped down to her underwear in front of her entire class. The shocking incident was caught on camera by another student who witnessed what happened.
The recent incident of a 15-year old student in the Salem-Keizer School District being mishandled by her teacher is truly disheartening. Under no circumstances should such an act be tolerated, and this story serves as a reminder of why teachers need to maintain certain levels of decorum when dealing with minors.
Sara Rue was feeling very anxious when she witnessed her teacher get into an argument with another student. When she tried to step out into the hallway to collect herself, the teacher forcefully grabbed the teen girl’s shirt and pulled her back inside the classroom, resulting in her top being ripped off in front of all her classmates.
The incident exposed Rue’s body and red bra to everyone present, leaving her embarrassed and crying on the floor. She later admitted that she felt self-conscious because “everyone saw how fat I am.”
The school district’s policy allows for a teacher to use physical force if it is deemed reasonable in certain circumstances, so authorities are trying to figure out if this incident falls within those parameters or not. It is difficult to see how any teacher can be granted permission to strip a female student simply because she attempted to leave the room.
Although Sara Rue could have handled the situation better by communicating that she needed to leave, it does not take away from the fact that Carrie McCann crossed a line here by putting hands on her student – something which should never have happened regardless of what type of behavior was exhibited prior.
McCann had been teaching in Salem-Keizer for 23 years without any prior complaints against her name before this incident occurred but resigned without receiving severance afterward once placed on paid leave pending investigation by school administrators.
It goes without saying that teachers do have challenging jobs, but they must remain conscious about their behavior when working with minors at all times as well , especially considering such acts can result in life-long consequences for students like Sara Rue who were violated in such ways due solely to lack of respect from authority figures.
