It is bad enough when we lose a service member during times of war.

Losing them during training, well, that breaks our hearts.

That is especially the case when we lose such a young service member with so much in her future.

Sad Day

A PA National Guard member lost her life during a training exercise.

Specialist Mackenzie Shay, 20, was killed when two vehicles collided.

The accident took place at the Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County.

Army Maj. Gen. Mark J. Schindler stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Specialist Mackenzie Shay’s family, friends and colleagues after this tragic accident.

“Our priority right now is taking care of the family and soldiers, ensuring they have all the resources they need during this critical time.”

David Bredl, Shay’s former high school cross-country and track coach, paid tribute.

He stated, “It broke my heart to hear this.

“[Mackenzie] was a really smart girl.

“She was a little feisty and fiery, and always tried to do her best and make her mark.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with her.”

Rest in peace, Specialist… our hearts go out to your family for their loss.

Thanks you for your service.
