A Wendy’s worker was shot in the head over BBQ sauce, and the only question to ask here is, “what is the world coming to?”

At 16 years old, Brian Durham Jr. has a long road of recovery ahead of him. But even though he will have to learn how to talk again, there was a chance this young man wouldn’t live at all.

The teenager was severely injured after someone shot him in the head while he was working at a Wendy’s on 19th Avenue and Glendale Road last Thursday.

It was an argument over BBQ sauce that caused the shooting, according to the teen’s father Brian Durham Sr.

“He was going to start speech therapy today,” his father said. “He is slowly making progress.”

Durham Jr., who is also called B-man by his family and friends, is now out of the ICU and he has been moved to his own room from the ICU.

The teen is now off a ventilator and he is breathing unassisted. He is following commands and is able to move his hands and legs, his father said. Thank goodness.

After a brief investigation, the Phoenix Police Department arrested Theotis Polk, 27, in connection to this Wendy’s shooting.

“It was senseless, he shot a little boy in the head that had nothing to do with the situation, and traumatized him for the rest of his life,” Durham Sr. said.

B-Man had gotten the job at Wendy’s about four months prior to this because he wanted to help his mother with the bills. His father said that he had a strong desire to help people and was considering joining the military when he turned 18.

“By going to the military, he was going to help the world,” Durham Sr. said. “He likes helping people.”

The teen’s dad is now holding on to the memories spent with his son in hopes of replaying them soon.

“He would have taken my son from me, but God willing he didn’t,” Durham Sr. said. “I got it in my heart that God was with us. And people, I don’t know from where they’re helping us out and we just want to thank y’all.”

Polk is now facing a litany of charges that include aggravated assault and firearm possession by a prohibited possessor. Hopefully, the judge will give him a lengthy prison sentence due to the circumstances of this case.

The family has a GoFundMe account set up in order to help them pay for B-Man’s medical expenses.
