Donald Trump has had a bit of a turnaround on a key issue this week.
He had been asked if he would accept the role of Speaker of the House, and he was quite dodgy about the question.
He did not say no, but the way he answered the question made it obvious he has bigger fish to fry.
Then Trump switched gears, openly stating that he would accept the Speaker position on a limited basis.
I’ll Take It
Several of the Trump loyalists in the House are still trying to get Trump to be Speaker.
With there clearly being a divide in the House, Trump offered to take the gavel to unite the party.
He stated, “I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress.
“If they don’t get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president.
“They have asked me if I would take it for a short period of time for the party, until they come to a conclusion — I’m not doing it because I want to — I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision.”
Now I am going to tell you why that will never happen.
First, most of the divide in the House is over Trump, so this really makes no sense.
Now, that is not a shot at Trump, but his loyalists and the establishment members have been at odds for years, so there is no way Trump would ever get enough votes to secure the position.
Second, if you want to see Congress stuck in quicksand, this would be the way to do it because Schumer would block every piece of legislation.
Finally, the House is going to get this worked out.
There are now three members of the GOP caucus that have entered the race, two of whom would easily get a unanimous vote if they are selected.
Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the position, and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) is making some big moves to try and get the support to win the nomination.
Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) may also jump in the race, but I just don’t see him getting enough support to overtake either Jordan or Scalise.
Let’s go on the premise that either Jordan or Scalise wins this, and I would think that regardless of which one prevails, the other will support him and it will be a unanimous vote the first time around to secure the gave and get Congress moving again.
