Trudeau Backs Down, Gives in to Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already backed down, caving to President Donald Trump’s demands to protect the U.S.-Canada border and crack down on fentanyl trafficking.

Over the weekend, Trump implemented 25% tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

In response, Mexico and Canada threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs — but they have both since backed down.

In a February 3 post on X, Trudeau announced that he “just had a good call with President Trump” about the situation.

“Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” he wrote.

Trudeau, who announced in early January that he would be resigning as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party, went on to reveal that nearly 10,000 frontline personnel “are and will be working on protecting the border” — while also announcing a new commitment to “appoint a Fentanyl Czar.”

The outgoing prime minister also noted that Canada would be fighting drug trafficking by designating cartels “as terrorists” — something that Trump has already done — and would be placing the border under “24/7” watch. He also stated that a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force would be created to “combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.”

“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million,” Trudeau added.

He concluded by caving in to Trump’s threats, noting that his proposed retaliatory tariffs would “be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”

Trump responded to the news in a post on Truth Social.

“Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country,” Trump wrote.

He proceeded to quote several promises from Trudeau’s X post, then added: “As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!”
