A top Republican has passed away at the age of 68 after being hospitalized for what his brother said was an inflamed ulcer.

North Dakota’s Republican Attorney General, Wayne Stenehjem, has passed away at 68 years old, according to an announcement from his office that was released on Friday, January 28th.

“It is with the utmost sadness that the Office of Attorney General announces that Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem passed away unexpectedly on Friday January 28, 2022. He was 68,” the statement said.

“We know Wayne was a widely respected and well-known public figure, but we ask that his family be allowed time to grieve in private,” the statement continued.

The attorney general’s office also noted that funeral arrangements are pending, though they have not provided a cause of death.

His spokeswoman, Liz Brocker, revealed that Stenehjem died at approximately 6:20 p.m. at a hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, but said that she could not provide any further details on the matter.

Attorney General Stenehjem’s brother, Allan, told local news outlet KFYR-TV that his brother had been brought to a hospital on the morning of January 28th following a medical call to his home.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum released a statement mourning the loss of his colleague and friend, and extending his condolences to Stenehjem’s family, in a post on Twitter.

“Like so many North Dakotans who treasured his friendship and admired him for his more than four decades of exceptional service to our state, Kathryn and I are absolutely devastated by the passing of Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem,” he tweeted.

“Wayne embodied public service, both as a legislator and the longest-serving attorney general in our state’s 133-year history. Kathryn and I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Beth, Andrew and the entire Stenehjem family,” Burgum wrote in a subsequent tweet.
