Soccer coach Camilo Hurtado Campos left his phone at a restaurant recently and that turned out to have serious consequences. When staff looked through it to find a way of contacting the owner, they instantly dialed police instead. The friendly and helpful workers had stumbled into “hundreds of videos and images” appearing to show him raping “unconscious boys.” In Tennessee, police point out, “rape of a child is a Class A felony that carries a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.

A popular coach

A Tennessee soccer coach is safely behind bars after police in Franklin were alerted to hundreds of horrific images and videos. Allegedly, the 63-year-old “recruited boys onto his soccer team and then sexually abused them.

He’s described as “popular” but that was before everyone in the neighborhood learned he filmed himself drugging and raping “at least 10 boys as young as 9 years old.

Coach Campos is currently being held on a $525,000 bond, charged with raping a child and sexually exploiting a minor. They consider that rape charge a Class A felony and stick you in a cage for a minimum of 25 years for that.

In cases like this one, no matter how short the term handed down by the judge, it seems to turn into a death sentence. Inmates with nothing to lose but some TV privileges like to make dealing with those particular criminals a “hobby” to help pass the time.

The coach is also being charged with sexual exploitation of a minor. That’s a “Class B felony when the suspect possesses more than 100 images or materials that show a minor engaged in sexual activity.

They issued a statement confirming that they found “hundreds of disturbing videos and pictures” on the phone. “In many of them, Campos recorded himself raping unconscious boys between approximately 9 and 17 years old.

Victims not identified

Police note that everyone they’ve talked to so far are shocked because Campos is such a popular coach. Now it adds up why he “frequented nearby school playgrounds.” He seemed to have a valid reason.

That’s “where he approached kids and recruited them as players on his team.” That isn’t all he recruited them for. “After gaining their trust, Campos invited many of the kids to his home where he drugged and then raped them.” They know about the ones in his phone, there may have been more.

Police note that coach Campos has “lived in Franklin for two decades.” So far, they have been able to identify two of the victims and “are working with schools in the area to identify the others.

Detectives note that “because the boys were unconscious when they were raped, some may not be aware of what happened to them.” They also mentioned that “they expect to file more charges against Campos as their investigation unfolds.

The timing on the arrest of Coach Campos matches up with other headlines regarding cases like the one involving Larry Nassar, “a former doctor for the national women’s gymnastics team who was found guilty of sexually abusing girls and women under his care.

Also recently, “three former members of the U.S. snowboarding team said in a lawsuit that former coach Peter Foley sexually abused or harassed them over decades without action from the sport’s governing bodies.” Foley is fighting that and says he’s done nothing wrong.
