Pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell is fighting back against the defamation suit filed against her by Dominion Voting Systems over her accusations of fraud and irregularities during the 2020 election.
Lawsuit
On January 8, 2021, Dominion Voting Systems filed a federal complaint against Powell “to set the record straight,” according to the company.
“During a Washington, D.C. press conference, a Georgia political rally, and a media blitz, Powell falsely claimed that Dominion had rigged the election, that Dominion was created in Venezuela to rig elections for Hugo Chávez, and that Dominion bribed Georgia officials for a no-bid contract,” the company said.
The New York Post reported at the time that “[Powell] claimed votes were illegally ‘injected’ into Dominion-brand counting machines and that a software algorithm changed votes for Trump into votes for Democratic opponent Joe Biden.”
Powell’s lawyers have filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that “reasonable people would not accept such statements as fact but view them only as claims that await testing by the courts through the adversary process.”
The motion to dismiss also argues that Powell’s statements were protected by the First Amendment, as they constitute political speech.
The Bottom Line
Conservatives are split when it comes to Sidney Powell and her claims. Some believe that she is 100 percent correct in all of her assertions of fraud and irregularities, others believe that her claims were overstated and outlandish. Regardless, her allegations deserved to be heard by the courts, as there was at least some evidence of issues with Dominion Voting Systems. Instead, the courts acted out of fear, dismissing the cases without even hearing the arguments. Now, the courts are fine with hearing a case against Powell herself. It is concerning that the judicial system in this country is so politicized.
