Arguably the greatest female tennis player to have ever graced the courts, surely the best over the last three decades, is going to call it quits.
Serena Williams, the most dominant player of her time, is retiring from tennis as a player after the U.S. Open.
Williams announced her retirement on social media.
She’s Gone
If you have ever seen Serena play in her prime, you know just how powerful this woman was on the court.
With 23 Grand Slam titles to her credit, she overpowered the competition when she was on form.
Lately, she has been plagued with injuries and has not won a Grand Slam title in more than five years.
She has decided to go “in a different direction.”
She stated, “That time is always hard when you love something so much.
“My goodness do I enjoy tennis.
“But now, the countdown has begun.
“I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena.
“I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”
Tickets are already going through the roof for opening night.
However, until the draw is announced, we do not even know if she will play on the first night.
Fans should not expect anything monumental from her in her final tourney, as she continues to struggle with injuries, which has hurt her fitness to be tournament ready, just as we saw with her early exit at Wimbledon.
In addition to being an amazing singles player, she teamed up with her sister Venus to destroy doubles teams during the last three decades.
There may be some records in the game that she does not have, but I don’t think anyone can doubt the fact that we are unlikely to see anyone like her again anytime soon.
