Well, this is a very mysterious story.
Kansas GOP lawmakers have been left scratching their heads after receiving over 70 letters in the mail containing a “suspicious white powder”.
Now, the FBI and various state law enforcement agencies have opened an investigation into the mysterious circumstance and are collecting the letters.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), dozens of lawmakers reported receiving the packages on Friday, June 16.
A KBI spokesperson stated:
“Law enforcement is working to safely collect the letters and investigate the incidents. Currently, no injuries have been reported, but we ask everyone to remain vigilant in handling mail.”
Among those lawmakers targeted include Republican state Attorney General Kris Kobach and several other Republicans.
The director of Legislative Administrative Services for the Kansas legislature, Thomas Day, explained that the letters had return addresses in both Kansas City and Topeka.
As news of the suspicious packages began to circulate, Republican Senate President Ty Masterson emailed lawmakers instructing them to exercise caution when opening mail from this point forward.
In the emails, Masterson wrote:
“If you have something that looks odd, please contact the KBI prior to opening OR if you find a white substance, please call the KBI prior to handling.”
Although the motive behind the packages is unknown at this time, one lawmaker believes it was clear that Republicans are being “targeted.”
State Senator Molly Baumgardner made a statement:
“We’re using our finest resources and it’s being squandered because someone – or a group of people – are very deliberately trying to make a point. Kansas Legislators that are Republican are being targeted. There appears to be some message.”
