You just have to love the political corruption in this country.
They all do it, even the ones that claim to be innocent and fighting corruption.
To that point, I give you Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Have Some Money
Sanders is a fundraising machine, so it is only natural that he wants to get his hands on or have some family members share the bounty.
For Sanders, this is being done via the Sanders Institute.
This is a nonprofit founded by his wife and stepson, Jane O’Meara Sanders and David Driscoll.
Earlier this year, Sanders cut two checks for $100,000 each that went to the nonprofit.
More recently, he cut a check for $75,000.
Now, the nonprofit has minimal activity, nor does it really raise a lot of money other than Sanders’ donations.
For instance, in 2021, it raised about $716,000, but almost 40 percent of that money went to salary.
Of that $257,000, almost 60 percent went to Driscol’s salary, which makes this nothing more than money funnel to Sanders’ family members.
Kendra Arnold, executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, stated, “Obviously, a senator is not allowed to use his campaign to simply transfer large sums of money to family members – regardless of the route the dollars take.
“While on its face, the percentage the nonprofit paid out in salary alone is not necessarily problematic, legally the issue hinges on whether the salaries were paid for bona fide services at fair market value.
“In other words, if the nonprofit and its executive director are truly producing work and actually earning the money, it is not illegal, but it is frowned upon.
“On the other hand, if nothing or very little is being done to earn the money legitimately, then it is highly likely a serious campaign finance violation has taken place.”
I cannot wait for someone to get into Sanders’ face and ask him to explain this one.
