News reports were, pardon the pun, blowing up on Tuesday night after a Russian missile strike.
As Russia lobbed a massive salvo of missiles into Ukraine, one hit in Poland, killing two people.
The issue here obviously being that Poland is a NATO country.
If it decides to invoke Article 5, we could very soon find ourselves in the midst of WWIII.
Explain This
Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, was pussyfooting around the obvious, not willing to confirm this was definitely a Russian missile.
Polish foreign minister Zbigniew Rau was being a bit more forceful, demanding an audience with the Russian ambassador.
US officials are now bracing for the worst but remain committed to defending NATO countries.
Pentagon spokesman Gen. Patrick Ryder stated, “First, let me go ahead and highlight up front that we are aware of the press reports alleging that two Russian missiles have struck a location inside Poland near the Ukraine border.
“I can tell you that we don’t have any information at this time to corroborate those reports and are looking into this further, and so when we do have an update to provide, we’ll be sure to do so.”
It is a fairly safe bet that Russia will either deny it is their rocket or apologize for a strike that went off course.
The question is if Poland will accept that excuse or push the issue.
This is a very real threat, literally with a World War now hanging in the balance.
If Poland chooses to pursue Article 5, NATO allies must defend, and World War III begins.

UPDATE: 7:37 a.m EST – Poland’s president now says the missile appears to have been a Ukrainian mistake. He stated, “We have no evidence at the moment that it was a rocket launched by Russian forces. However, there are many indications that it was a missile that was used by Ukraine’s anti-missile defense.”
