“Nina O’Brien sustained a compound fracture of her left tibia and fibula just short of the finish in the second run of the giant slalom. She was transported to the hospital in Yanqing where an initial stabilization procedure was successfully performed by local doctors. She will return to the US for further evaluation and care.
Nina has received excellent care from the doctors in Yanqing.
Nina would like to express her gratitude to all of the people who assisted her so quickly in the finish area at the race, and especially to the doctors and nurses at the hospital who have taken such great care of her.”

There were several other crashes that took place during the Olympic events, including one of O’Brien’s teammates, Mikaela Shiffrin, who also fell during the giant slalom competition. These incidents brought up concerns from many people on Twitter.
One meteorologist, Katie Nickolaou, who works for CBS 14, blames the manmade snow in China‘s staged events.
“Something is serious wrong with the snow at the Olympics… My heart goes out to Nina O’Brien I’ve never seen so many crashes during numerous different events…” she tweeted.
“The area hosting the Olympics gets barely any snow annually. That isn’t necessarily a problem until you consider the extreme cold temperatures the area also experiences… That means manmade snow turns to a sheet of ice instead of individual crystals. Very dangerous…” Nickolaou wrote in a subsequent tweet.
