After giving birth to a baby girl, a new mother experienced a moment of joy before the “recently qualified” young doctor violently yanked out her placenta, killing her.
New mother Alisa Tepikina, 22, had just given birth at a hospital in Nizhneserginskaya, which is located in the Sverdlovsk region of Russia, but the placenta was not coming out like it was supposed to. Rather than performing surgery to remove it, an inexperienced doctor decided to just pull harder.
A senior Russian obstetrician referred to the cause of death as “aggressive removal of the placenta.”
The placenta is attached to the uterine wall, and if it becomes dislodged before the time is right, it can cause catastrophic internal bleeding. In this case, Alisa Tepikina experienced “excruciating pain” as she died in the delivery room because “an inexperienced obstetrician forcefully yanked out her baby’s placenta.”
Alisa’s family is now asking police to investigate her death as a case of criminal negligence.
Her father, Dmitry Malyukov, 47, said: “We have been told that the ‘birth’ of the placenta did not occur. The midwife called in a doctor. The obstetrician, aged 27 and recently qualified, began to pull the umbilical cord roughly. My daughter was suffering, she was screaming in pain. But the doctor paid no attention.”
A friend of the family was also in the hospital when Alisa died. “She tugged the umbilical cord with real force – the uterus was inverted,” the friend said. “Alisa screamed so loud that she could be heard throughout the hospital. This is like something from the Middle Ages. This caused a painful shock, severe bleeding, and she fell into a coma. Unfortunately, she never regained consciousness.”
Once the doctors realized what had happened, a helicopter was put on standby to bring Alisa to a surgical hospital. Unfortunately, the new mother was too weak to fly, so surgeons rushed into the room to attempt to save her. In the end, there was nothing they could do.
Her cause of death has been listed as severe shock caused by pain.
Alisa’s husband, Nikolay Tepikin, was not there to witness his wife’s death, as the baby had suffered a minor neck injury after being born due to the inexperience of the people in the delivery room. Nikolay had been forced to bring the baby to another hospital.
When he returned hours later, the doctors attempted to deceive him, telling him his wife was seriously ill. They brought him into the room with her body, but did not tell him she was dead.
“Her eyes were covered in blindfolds, her jaw was tied up,” he said. “There were tubes everywhere for a lung ventilator but no machine nearby. I reached out to hold her hand – and it was cold.”
The doctor whose negligence and inexperience killed the new mother has been suspended, and a criminal case has been launched.
