According to President Donald Trump, elderly Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is “not equipped mentally” and has “let the Republican Party go to hell.”
McConnell is almost equally despised by both the Democrats and conservatives for a myriad of reasons. Despite championing some Republican causes during his tenure in the Senate from 1985 to present, McConnell has on numerous occasions stabbed conservative voters in the back — from his “Ukraine First” position to his nonstop efforts to block any America First policies or candidates.
Beyond his failures as a senator and Senate Majority Leader, McConnell is also one of many lawmakers who have refused to retire despite being very elderly and facing significant health challenges — refusing to hand over the reigns of power to the younger generation.
The 83-year-old senator has had numerous health scares, including freezing for extended periods of time during public events twice, and falling down inside the halls of Congress at least twice just in the last week. While McConnell did step down from the position of the leader of Senate Republicans back in January after being the longest-serving Senate party leader in history, he still tries to wield his outsized influence over the chamber.
Trump called attention to McConnell’s failures while speaking to reporters on February 13, responding to the news that he had once again voted with the Democrats in an unsuccessful attempt to block one of Trump’s appointees: now-Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. McConnell also voted against confirming Tulsi Gabbard for the position of Director of National Intelligence and Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary.
“He’s not voting against Bobby,” Trump said, referring to McConnell’s vote against Kennedy. “He’s voting against me.”
“If I didn’t come along, the Republican Party wouldn’t even exist right now,” he added. “He’s not equipped mentally. He wasn’t equipped ten years ago mentally, in my opinion. He let the Republican Party go to hell.”
“He had an ability to raise money because of his position as leader, which anybody could do,” Trump told CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins, adding: “You could do it even, and that is [to] say a lot.”

As Breitbart News noted, “Under McConnell’s Senate leadership, the national debt rose more than $35 trillion, illegal immigration surged, and real wages for American workers did not grow. Obamacare was enacted in 2010. Congress bailed out big banks in 2008, and social media companies silenced individuals without repercussions. McConnell also has ties to the Chinese government.”
The elderly senator has experienced health issues numerous times over the past few years, even falling down stairs inside the Senate chamber in February, after which he was placed in a wheelchair.

He also fell in December 2023 and was left with a hurt wrist, a bruised hand, and bandages on his finger and face. McConnell even received a concussion after falling at a hotel in Washington, D.C., in 2023.
