The challenge has been laid down, and the challenge has been accepted.
For the past few weeks, Joe Biden has been adamant that the debt ceiling will not be part of any bargaining.
Then came Speaker McCarthy dropping a bit of a bombshell that he and Biden already opened the door to a discussion on this.
Biden was asked about it by a reporter, to which he offered a direct response to McCarthy.
Joe bowed up his chest and stated, “Show me your budget and I’ll show you mine.”
Accepted
McCarthy was more than happy to take the challenge.
He responded, “President Biden: I accept your invitation to sit down and discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending.
“I look forward to our meeting.”
Reporters pushed on the subject, and Biden confirmed that the meeting with McCarthy, at least in part, would center around the debt ceiling.
Joe did not get the memo, however, because that is not what he was supposed to say.
The Great Oz behind the curtain walked that back, stating that the talks with McCarthy are “general” talks and “not a negotiation.”
Let’s see who blinks first.
