House Minority Leader McCarthy (R-CA) was hoping to exchange that title for Speaker of the House on Tuesday.

As of Monday night, McCarthy was still several votes short of the 218 he needs.

So, McCarthy sent out a letter to make a concession to try to get the resistance against him on his side.

He got their attention, but I am not sure it will be enough to get the gavel.

Not Enough

McCarthy sent out a last-minute letter to the caucus to try to win everyone over.

In his letter, stated, “Just as the Speaker is elected by the whole body, we will restore the ability for any 5 members of the majority party to initiate a vote to remove the Speaker if so warranted.”

He continued, “Congress was never intended for Zoom, and no longer will members be able to phone it in while attending lavish international weddings or sailing on their boat. We will meet, gather and debate in person — just as the founders envisioned.”

The problem is that the resistance wanted it to be any member, not five.

One of the high-profile Republicans that wants McCarthy replaced in leadership is Rep. Matt Gaetz.

He stated, “Every single Republican in Congress knows that Kevin does not actually believe anything. He has no ideology.

“Some conservatives are using this fact to convince themselves that he is the right leader for the moment, as McCarthy is so weak he’ll promise anything to anyone.”

We will know soon enough if McCarthy’s concession worked.
