Kevin McCarthy caught the news report of what the new foreign minister for China had to say and decided to cancel his anticipated trip to Taiwan. That’s a good thing. He didn’t admit that he was mostly concerned with his own safety. The spin team did a good job of deflecting attention from that by emphasizing an interesting alternative.

China chills McCarthy

China has a brand new foreign minister this week and he already issued a clear and stark warning to Washington. Joe Biden and Antony Blinken seem not be able to decode his message. Newly anointed Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy proved on Monday that he’s fluent in the language of diplomacy.

As soon as he heard what “Wolf Warrior” Qin Gang had to say, he called his travel planner and pulled the plug on a Taiwan visit. He’s allergic to having his plane shot down. To Kevin McCarthy, “one-upping” Nancy Pelosi isn’t worth dying for.

For months now, Blinky Blinken has been trying to Wang Chung with Wang Yi and getting nowhere. Wang has been just as frustrated. He’s been insisting over and over again that Washington needs to stay out of the internal affairs of China. Especially on Taiwan. The territory belongs to them and they can do whatever they want there.

Biden and Blinky can’t seem to comprehend that. Wang was apparently too nice and lost favor with Xi Jinping over it. Qin came out kicking.

Over in China, they call Qin Gang “Dances With Wolves” for his “wolf warrior diplomacy.” He made a catchy statement one day and it’s been following him around for years.

When jackals and wolves are blocking the way, and hungry wolves are attacking us, Chinese diplomats must then dance with the wolves and protect and defend our home and country.” He’s living up to his reputation with his very first press conference as top diplomat.

Impending disaster

Qin quickly announced, “if the United States does not hit the brakes, and continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailment, which will become conflict and confrontation, and who will bear the catastrophic consequences?

China is only thinly veiling their hint of nuclear catastrophe with a reference to the toxic and preventable disaster in Ohio. “Such competition is a reckless gamble, with the stakes being the fundamental interests of the two peoples and even the future of humanity.

McCarthy can read between those lines and doesn’t want his plane to go down in flames over the Taiwan Strait, simply to prove a point. Especially when it’s China who will be making the point. Our speaker knows what a warning sounds like, so suddenly decided a junket to the Bahamas would be better. The staff downplayed the disappointment by noting Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen can come visit him instead. That had folks scratching their heads because her coming directly to him would diplomatically be a bigger slap in the face to Beijing.

McCarthy showed the same mastery of Machiavellian intrigue which secured his speaker’s gavel. Ms. Ing-wen won’t be coming to visit him. She already has a politically harmless trip to California on her calendar. He can bump elbows with her there and save face for everyone. At least, he’s showing the Chinese he’s taking their warning seriously, which is more than Biden’s handlers are doing.

Helping McCarthy make up his mind. If there was any doubt in his mind after what the mighty Qin had to say, Tsai’s administration provided McCarthy’s office with “some intelligence about what the Chinese Communist party is recently up to and the kinds of threats they pose.

Shooting down McCarthy’s plane could only be the appetizer. Taiwan could become a fully free and democratic pile of smoking rubble. The Taiwanese official pointed out that China is “not in a good situation.” The Pooh Bear is about to go postal like in that recent movie. “There might be policies even more irrational than in the past emanating from Beijing. If we can try to control this together, the risks it brings for everybody can be contained better.
