Police responded to a disturbance at a Miami airport that stemmed from a delayed flight. Upon arriving, the unruly passenger began a massive brawl, which ended with one of the men biting an officer in the head.
According to airport employees, after hearing that his flight was delayed, an unruly passenger decided to take the keys to a transport golf cart and refused to let the employee leave.
When police were called to calm the situation, the passenger and another individual began to get physical with the officers.
In a video shared on Twitter, an officer can be seen trying to restrain an individual when all hell broke loose. Before he knew it, the officer was in a fight with multiple people.
Eventually, the officer was able to escape the fight and regain control of the situation by drawing his weapon.
Mayfrer Serranopaca, 30, of Kissimmee, Florida, and Alberto Yanez Suarez, 32, of Odessa, Texas, were arrested, and were each charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Serranipaca is also facing six additional counts that include burglary and inciting a riot.
According to police, one of the officers had to receive medical attention after Serranopaca bit him on the head. Serranopaca also received treatment for injuries.
Miami International Airport Director and CEO Ralph Cutié released a statement following the brawl, which read: “Like airports across the country, MIA is seeing record-high passenger numbers this winter travel season. Unfortunately, that passenger growth has come with a record-high increase nationwide in bad behavior as well, such as the incident this evening at MIA.”
“Disruptive passengers face police arrest, civil penalties up to $37,000, being banned from flying, and potential federal prosecution. We have worked so hard to rebound from the pandemic and make traveling safe again, so we can visit our loved ones,” the statement continued.
