New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (R) announced that he will not be running for reelection in 2024.
His decision ends weeks of speculation over his future plans and brings a close to an era of determined leadership under his tenure as the state’s governor.
Sununu has had a long and successful career in public service, having won four consecutive terms as governor since 2016.
During this time, he has enacted policies geared towards cutting taxes, balancing the budget year after year, and restoring trust in the State Government.
In addition to this impressive record of achievement, Sununu’s ability to unite people from across different political spectrums and find practical solutions to complex challenges have been seen as a testament to his leadership and dedication to the people of New Hampshire.
The news was met with both praise from Republicans and optimism from Democrats across the state.
Sununu had been considering a potential presidential bid but ultimately decided against it; when asked about his decision on CNN’s Dana Bash show in June, he said “When you look at what’s happening out there, you obviously have a very large field… I think the former President Trump is doing much better in the polls than folks thought.”
He went on to explain that he felt his voice could be best used by focusing on growing the Republican Party rather than seeking higher office himself.
Clearly then, instead of pursuing personal ambitions or glory-seeking goals – something many other politicians do – Sununu chose to put country before self for the greater good of all citizens regardless of political affiliation or background.
New Hampshire GOP Chairman Chris Ager also released a statement following Sununu’s announcement which showed appreciation for all that he had accomplished during his term: “Governor Sununu has been a unifying force for the Republican Party in our state… His ability to bring people together and find practical solutions to complex challenges has been a testament to his leadership and dedication to the people of New Hampshire”.
Ray Buckley, Chairman for State Democrats expressed his happiness for the move: “This announcement today marks an inflection point for our state… we can begin to turn back the clock on damaging policies enacted under Chris Sununu’s tenure”.
It remains unclear who will step up next as New Hampshire’s Governor throughout 2021-2024 but no doubt whomever takes up position will have big shoes left behind by Governor Chris Suunnu’s legacy over these past 8 years.
