Communist dictator Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua recently authorized the installation of Russian military bases in his country, according to the Russian state news site Avia.Pro.
This decision could have a significant impact on the geopolitical balance in the region, due to its close proximity to the United States.
Nicaragua is located just 3000 kilometers away from Washington DC, meaning that any missiles stationed there could reach the capital in very little time.
Alba Azucena Torres Mejia, Nicaragua’s ambassador to Russia, has acknowledged their partnership with Moscow by saying “We are friends with [Russia], we love and respect this incredible country…Nicaragua will try to develop relations with Russia in all spheres”.
It is clear that this move by Ortega and his alliance with Russia has serious implications for US foreign policy.
The White House cannot simply ignore such a major change within its own backyard.
While no official response has been issued yet, it is likely that they will take aggressive action against this development in order to protect American interests in the region.
It remains to be seen how much of an effect this move will have on US-Nicaraguan relations, or what measures may be taken as a result.
The partnership between Nicaragua and Russia raises questions about global security as well.
If these missiles were used against other countries or organizations outside of Central America, then tensions would certainly rise throughout many parts of the world – not just between Russia and America but also among other nations who would become involved in any potential conflicts caused by these weapons being deployed elsewhere.
Therefore, it is important for international leaders to come together and ensure that such weapons are never used for anything other than self-defense purposes within their respective territories – which should be respected at all times regardless of political affiliations or current alliances between states.
