Authorities in California are trying to figure out why a horrifying scene played out on the Pacific Coast Highway.
A well-respected and loved doctor was brutally murdered.
He was run off the road, then stabbed by the assailant.
Horror on the Road
There must be some grievance between Vanroy Evan Smith, 39, and Dr. Michael Mammone, 58, but police have yet to figure it out.
Wednesday afternoon, Smith ran the doctor down, and after stabbing him in the back, he also tried to shoot him.
Some passersby jumped in and stopped Smith, holding him until police arrived.
Dr. Mammone died from his wounds.
He was an emergency room doctor at Providence Mission Hospital Laguna Beach.
After hearing of his death, the hospital stated, “We are stunned by this devastating tragedy.
“The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend.
“We will honor Dr. Mammone’s dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care.”
