Former House Majority Leader Suffers Stroke

Former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) has reportedly suffered a stroke, according to a statement from his office.

Hoyer’s spokesperson and deputy chief of staff Margaret Mulkerrin released a statement on Tuesday revealing that the former House majority leader had suffered a “mild” stroke and is currently undergoing medical treatment — though his office believes that the 85-year-old lawmaker will be able to return to work after treatment.

“On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,” Mulkerrin said. “Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms.”

She went on to note that Hoyer, who has served in Congress since 1981 and is currently running for reelection, “expects to resume his normal schedule next week.”

“Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team,” the statement concluded.

Hoyer received well-wishes on social media from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including his general election opponent, Republican candidate Michelle Talkington.

“I was shocked to hear about Representative Hoyer’s stroke. My whole family is keeping Steny and his family in our prayers today,” she wrote in a post on X.

“I am so glad to hear that my dear friend, Congressman Steny Hoyer is recovering well after experiencing a mild stroke this weekend. We are all wishing you a speedy recovery and know you will be back delivering for Marylanders, as you always have, very soon!” wrote Maryland Democrat Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) also responded to the news, writing: “Yumi and I are keeping Steny and the Hoyer family in our thoughts and prayers, and are glad to hear he is doing well. We wish him well as he recovers.”

Hoyer’s stroke comes amid renewed scrutiny over the age of many politicians, with Americans questioning whether there should be a maximum age limit to run for office in light of 81-year-old President Joe Biden’s severe cognitive decline.

In fact, Hoyer himself was afraid to answer a question from Fox News’ Sean Hannity about whether Biden should run for reelection because of his age.

“I’m not going to go there,” he said in response to the question back in July 2022.
