The tactic worked.
The moment Judge Cannon issued the ruling on the special master, the DOJ was forced to shut down the Trump investigation.
Now, everything is on hold until the special master can review the documents.
Not Happy
The ruling for the special master halts the DOJ from digging through the roughly 11,000 documents it removed from Trump’s home.
The DOJ may actually be prolonging this.
It has already made it known that it will appeal the case, surely hoping to find a liberal panel on the appeals court.
If that happens, the Cannon order will be lifted, and the DOJ will be free to move forward… until Trump’s team appeals, which it will do.
This will likely bounce around the courts for a few months before it finally winds up before the Supreme Court.
If the DOJ prevails, the case will likely drag out for the rest of this year.
If the DOJ fails, both sides will have to move forward with the search for a special master, then that special master will have to review every document before the DOJ can move forward.
This is the worst-case scenario for the GOP even though Trump’s team looks at it as a win.
This means that Trump will likely announce that he is running and roll the dice that he will not be indicted.
Then it will be up to the voters to decide if they want to nominate a candidate for the White House that could literally be on trial for espionage during the final days of the presidential election.
