There are some disturbing images of children dangling from the windows of a high-rise apartment that was totally engulfed in flames. Viewer discretion is advised.
Last month, some terrifying video captured teens who were climbing down a fourth-floor window to escape a fire that had killed one and injured seven others in a Manhattan apartment building.
The 14-story YCHA-run Riis Houses were nearly destroyed by flames on a Thursday in mid-December as firefighters and other first responders scrambled to put out the two-alarm fire.
The fire reportedly broke out on the fourth floor of the 14-story complex.
According to officials from the New York City Fire Department, the blaze began at the East Village complex around 7:08 a.m. According to the fire department, 180 firefighters were at the scene at the time of the blaze.
They pronounced one person dead at the scene, while there were seven others who were injured and one was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two others were in grave condition.
Video from the scene is showing thick black smoke billowing out of several windows on that fourth floor.
FDNY officials released their aerial ladder on their trucks so that they could help put the blaze out as soon as possible.
At 8:20 a.m. local time, the FDNY was able to confirm that this fire was under control.
There is no question that it is some disturbing imagery to see children dangling from a balcony in an attempt to escape these flames. There are some individuals that would receive PTSD from such an event and would need serious counseling in order to move on from it.
However, this is something that our first-responders encounter on a daily basis. Where would we be in this society if it weren’t for these brave men and women stepping up to the plate and doing everything in their power to keep us safe?
