Many Republicans have been pushing for single-issue appropriations bills in order to fund key components of the government as the budget battle continues to loom. Recently, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) made an appearance on Glenn beck’s show to offer an ominous warning to the Republican Party if they are unable to secure the southern border.
Roy spoke about what could be in store for the future of the GOP if they do not secure the southern border. He stated that if meaningful cuts are not made and meaningful steps taken to secure the border, it could spell disaster for the party as a whole – something he referred to as a “deal breaker”.
Back in May, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and President Biden negotiated a budget deal that received more votes from Democrats than Republicans. Conservative Republicans such as Roy argued that this was a bad deal that fell well short of goals set when McCarthy was elected Speaker in January.
The Freedom Caucus called for 20% cuts which would bring spending back to levels seen in 2019, but McCarthy was worried they wouldn’t even get 8%.
Roy believes that if the amendments process does not play out and meaningful cuts are not made, then it could mark an end to the Republican party altogether – something he considers an absolute “deal breaker”.
In order for things to remain afloat going forward, he believes securing the border must be top priority and issues like DOJ restraint need attention too.
It remains unclear how exactly this will all unfold over the next 48 hours but one thing is certain – this is indeed a critical juncture in American politics today with serious ramifications on both sides of aisle should things go awry.
As Rep Roy put it himself “If we can’t meaningfully cut spending along the lines of what you just described – meaningfully secure the border…then I don’t know why the hell we’re here.”
