Chicago residents aren’t real happy with their status as a sanctuary city. The protests against one migrant shelter were so “vocal” that the mayor was forced to scrap the project. Charity begins at home and there is no way that Windy City citizens will allow migrants from who knows where to push them out of their Amundsen Park fieldhouse.
Chicago resists relocation
The Galewood community near Chicago, Illinois, got so upset with plans to “turn the Amundsen Park fieldhouse into a new shelter for migrants” that the city had to rethink the whole idea.
As noted by one local alderman, “the city has put those plans on hold while it explores a possible alternative site.” There’s a deadbeat landlord who owes the city $3 million in fines. They’re willing to write those off if he coughs up the building for a shelter.
It wouldn’t be so bad if the fieldhouse in question was a vacant building. Mayor Brandon Johnson was all set to push out the community who’s heavily utilizing the structure already, leaving them with no alternatives.

They pay taxes and the migrants aren’t even allowed to work, so how can that be fair? The community wasn’t backing down so administrators in Chicago did.
The mayor’s office confirmed Monday night, October 16, “that the Amundsen Park shelter plan is on hold, but did not elaborate.”
That’s because earlier in the day, “opponents of the Amundsen Park plan had staged two protests asking Mayor Brandon Johnson to stop the transition before Chicago Park District staff is asked to hand over the keys to the fieldhouse.” They had quite a few choice things to say which were broadcast in all the media.

Didn’t even ask
Protester Linda Johnson voiced the big point on everyone’s mind. “How dare you make a decision without sitting down with us?” There are a whole bunch of desperately needed community activities going on in the building right now. Programming that “is irreplaceable to the Galewood community.”
Mayor Johnson in his socialist wisdom wants “take our resources away,” Gerald K. Harris insists. Let Chicago house the migrants downtown. “That’s our asset. We pay for it.” He’s president of the Windy City Dolphins Youth Football League.
“Our kids are doing some positive things. They’re not in the street. They’re not in gangs. They’re not doing anything that’s negative. They’re trying to grow and be productive young Black men and women.”

In downtown Chicago they’re happy if the gangs can restrict their gun play until after the sun goes down. The youth football program aren’t the only ones the mayor was ready to evict in favor of illegal aliens.
The park is also a prominent meeting place for seniors. Harris is also one of those. If the fieldhouse was turned into a shelter, seniors would have had to travel almost two miles to a replacement site. “They’re saying go two miles away. Half of them don’t drive,” Harris explains.
Even some of the local alderpeople “have repeatedly voiced that they feel the city is lacking transparency when it comes to opening shelters for migrants.” The neighborhood is the last to know. “As of Monday morning, more than 18,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago since the end of August 2022.“
