It would appear that Iran is looking to draw the United States into the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Iranian-backed Houthis shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone this week.
The drone was conducting surveillance over Yemen.
Take It Out
According to reports, the drone was in international airspace over international waters when it was taken out by the Houthis.
A Defense Department official stated, “We can confirm that a U.S. military MQ-9 remotely-piloted aircraft was shot down off the coast of Yemen by Houthi forces.”
Officials believe the $30 million drone was taken out by a SA-6 surface-to-air missile.
This is something that we have not seen happen since 2019.
It should also be noted that almost immediately after moving into the White House in 2021, Biden removed the Houthis from the United States list of terror groups.
These drones are primarily used to collect intelligence by the military, but they can be armed with up to eight Hellfire missiles.
The Defense Department stated that it is currently assessing the situation, but it has not hinted at how it will respond to the attack.
