The entire world is watching the happenings in Turkey and Syria right now.
A massive quake has rocked the two countries.
The death toll in the disaster has gone from 200 to 600 to 1,000 to 1,500 to now more than 5,000 people killed.
Tragedy Strikes
The quake was huge, registering at 7.8 and covering “an area about 20 miles from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital 60 miles from the Syrian border,” according to a report in the New York Post.
After the initial hit, there was an aftershock 10 minutes later that registered at 6.7.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated, “We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage.”
His hopes have been shattered, however, as rescue workers are only finding dead bodies at this point, and a lot of them.
As we noted above, the death toll has shot up to a staggering number in only 24 hours, and they are still digging through the rubble.
Joe Biden, of course, has already offered aid, with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan stating, “President Biden has directed USAID and other federal government partners to assess US response options to help those most affected.
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with the Government of Turkiye.”
Just add it to the bill, Joe.
